French Fries

If you think I'm just talking about the food, prepare to get blown away by a master of freshly-cut tribal house beats. Bongo samples, cowbells, and a 909 kick never tasted so good to your hungry ears. Hailing from team Youngunz, he started out producing breakout tracks like "Senta" and "Predador" that garnered him international attention without even touring. His texture then evolved from Buraka Som Sistema dancehall tribal funk to future-synth house heaven alongside emerging giants Pearson Sound and Canblaster. A mighty good slosh of sounds if you ask me!

A (not-so-) recent remix of Greenmoney's "Into You" has just gained support from sexy-house icon Kastle in his newest mix. Check it out if you're into good music -- or just good food for your ears.

Mind Bokeh

Imagine for a minute that music genres don't exist. You, a music layman, tiptoe with light steps towards me, unable to keep eye contact, your high-pitched voice barely cracking its way through your pathetic throat. "Could you offer me a music recommendation? I just want to hear good music. Oh thank you, great JWSM, for showing me the light!"

I'd have two words for you: Fuck off.

That would roughly translate to: I don't want to share this gem of an artist with you because I'm a pretentious asshole; but, if I were to reveal my secrets, I'd recommend this guy because he actually deserves recognition.

Enter Bibio. Stephen Wilkinson hails from central England, and his warm and lulling music definitely evokes emotions of a man trapped inside a house during a gray British rainstorm. And what a party that house would be having! Somewhat self-taught, he studied at the University of London in Sonic Arts and fell in love with IDM giants Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, and Autechre. He soon decided that he wanted to make his own mark in electronica and, after naming himself for a fly his father used while fishing -- childhood trips that connected Wilkinson with the sounds of nature -- Bibio has slowly transformed his sounds from the scratch of analog cassettes and lo-fi noises to beautifully layered melodies and electronic beats.

There's a certain modern nostalgia associated with this man, if that makes any sense. I would describe his music as if J Dilla, Animal Collective, and Caribou all lived with Simon and Garfunkel. I imagine all of them decked out in sharp lapel suits, eating green Rice Krispies Treats and smoking flavored tobacco out of pipes, discussing guitars and MPDs while chilling out on some burgundy velvet sofa-chairs.

And his new album, out March 28th on Warp Records, doesn't detract from that vibe. Named Mind Bokeh, it takes more influence from Ambivalence Avenue than it does Hand Cranked; but seeing as how I find the former much more listenable, I take that as a very good thing.

Anyway, I've obviously been real into this guy as of late, and you should too. End kindness; go back to your cave and resume listening to your manufactured commercial drivel.

Club Cheval

For those of you digging up that 9V power drill hidden deep in the asscrack of your toolshed / garage / sugar cupboard / wherever in response to the spate of shitty Dutch House that has been taking over the electro-house scene (cue end scene in Aronofsky's Pi), there is good news and great news.

Good news: You will cease to exist and do your part in curtailing the advances of global warming.

Great news: How many of you remember rocking your anuses off to Canblaster's dizzying summer hit, "Chicken Run"? Top Billin -- the DJ collective from Finland consisting of Sir Nenis, Fiskars and Flipperi, Anonymous, and J-Laini & Tane Lee -- has commissioned Club Cheval -- yet another DJ collective based in Paris made up of Canblaster, Panteros666, Sam Tiba, and MYD -- to make a follow-up to their massive Club Cheval EP, unironically named Club Cheval Remixed.

Squeaks, chirps, fat kicks and snares: these are the ingredients that make Dutch house so damn.. Dutchey. But somehow these guys forgo the regurgitated and redigested shit-formula in favor for sweaty club-friendly hits that will get even the music nerds to fist-pump their way into women's vaginas everywhere.

My personal favorites are Rob Threezy's punch-to-the-taint rework of the aforementioned "Chicken Run" and both remixes of the already excellent sub-bass killer "Barbie Weed." The Spox Remix gives the song more big-room appeal, while Subkittenz' effort really smoothes out the timbre by giving it a nice UK Grime vibe not unlike the wares of the big bosses over at Night Slugs.

Look for the EP to be released on the 28th this month! It's certainly a refreshing take on something that's obviously so massively appealing. Let's just hope the frat boys and club sluts don't ruin this brief moment of magic for the true music lovers out there.
