July 16: Plump DJs invade California!

Plump DJs (Lee Rous and Andy Gardner) are a dynamic London based DJ and producer twosome. Now entering their second decade in the scene, Lee and Andy were early pioneers of the so-called breakbeat genre in electronic music; their original sound was showcased in their first release "Plumpy Chunks/Electric Disco" - way back in 1999 - and blasted out a niche for the Plump DJs in the (then embryonic) breaks scene. The Plumps ascendency has been solidly consistent, they clean up every year at the prestigious Breakspoll, culminating in them finally breaking into the US scene in 2009 with a prime slot in the Sahara dance tent at Coachella. This year saw them taking out Beatport's Best Breakbeat Artist Award and had them gracing the decks at the 2010 Ultra Music Festival:

So how would I describe the Plump DJs sound? A veritable mélange of grimy subsonic basslines, underscored with punchy fractured kicks, woven together with melodic retro-sounding synths. To summarize: it's phat, it's old skool, it's deep, it's funky, it wobbles, it's breakbeat. Don't believe me? Hearing is believing:

The Plump DJs have a stunning panoply of tracks, and remixes on the vibrant Finger Lickin' Record label with kindred spirits such as Slyde, Soul of Man, Drumattic Twins and Stereo 8. After a 10 year stint on this label, however, the Plump DJs recently signed on new London-based label: Grand Hotel. They have become one of this label's new residents at events held at Fabric and Matter nightclubs in London, UK. Their recent remixes have been more eclectic including remixes of artists such as Deadmau5, Dave Spoon, and the Stanton Warriors.

Why do I like the Plump DJs? I feel answering this question is akin to reverse engineering MacDonald’s secret Big Mac sauce – I just don’t know why McD’s burgers stand out in my mind! The Plump DJs have an analogous “secret sauce”. I presume some sort of classified warehouse of phatty samples, jilted long-forgotten synths – available only in the darkest corners of eBay’s electronics section, and I think their most important ingredient is their keen sense of Awesomeness!

Just to illustrate how rad these guys are, here's an old favorite video plug of mine: the Plump DJs doing a live mash up of The Human League and Motion Unit with added plumpness at Field Day Festival New Years Day in Australia -

This weekend the Plump DJs hit California in an unrivaled ‘shock and awe’ campaign: SoCal on Friday, July 16 @ Avalon, LA; NorCal on Saturday, July 17 @ Mezzanine, SF. I urge you to loosen your belt buckles and get plump this weekend!
